Primary duty of any person is to take care of his/her mother even if she is so bad. There is no substitute for her pain of carrying the child in her womb for nine months. Even if we serve her whole life with at most care, it will count only for her one minute's pain.. rest is still debt....this is the reason all sacred books say be grateful to mother, father and then guru and finally god.
If one take his mother as inspiration then he will never regret of skipping any planned activity. A mother works hard even when she is suffering from disease for the sake of her children. Why? She always wants her children to be happy and give top most priority to her kids and her family than her own health. She feels it is her responsibility to take care of her kids than herself. So she is selfless and always want her children welfare compared to anything else. She never get appreciated by her children or by her family but yet she continues to work. We usually think I worked hard and I did not get the appreciation for my work but she works lifelong but never gets anything in return. If we encorporate the same principle in our life then we never worry that we lost something or we did not get what we wanted. And most importantly if we use mother's principle in day to day life by giving importance to our goal or doing good deeds than our enjoyment then we will never regret. So first principle is to feel that is our responsibility and not duty before starting any task. Second principle is giving least importance to our desires. Third principle is we should always think what would my mother do in this kind of situation. Will she give importance to her happiness or her family? Here if take all good deeds or activities which make the mother happy as family, will we give importance to our desires or good deeds? That's why all puranas or our scriptures treat mother as goddess and called Amma. Our first guru will be mother and hence puranas say get inspiration from your guru and try to follow your guru.
